The 1.5-lesson admin fee and unlocking parent contact
How the tutor-paid administrative matching fee works, what it covers, and how settling it unlocks parent phone contact.

MatchMax does not take a cut of your tuition. Instead, when we successfully match you with a student, you pay a one-off administrative matching fee per case. This article explains exactly how that fee is calculated, when it is owed, and how settling it unlocks parent phone contact.
The fee in one sentence
The MatchMax Cap.57 administrative matching fee (tutor-pays, per ToS): 100% of Lesson 1 + 50% of Lesson 2.
This is the definition used in section 15 of the MatchMax Terms of Service, which is the source for everything in this article.
Fee table by situation
| Situation | Admin fee (tutor pays) |
|---|---|
| Private (B2C) match, per enrolled student / case | 1.5 lessons (100% of Lesson 1 + 50% of Lesson 2) |
| Short package of 5 lessons or fewer | 20% of the package [VERIFY-WITH-CEO] |
| Partner centre intro, 1st student | 1.5 lessons |
| Same centre within 6 months, 2nd student | 1.0 lesson |
| Same centre within 6 months, 3rd student | 0.5 lesson |
| Same centre within 6 months, 4th student or later | $0 (about 3.0 lessons max per centre introduction) |
What the fee means in practice
The fee is per match and is owed by you, the self-employed tutor. You pay it to MatchMax by FPS. To make the maths concrete: at HK$400 per hour with 60-minute lessons, the fee is HK$400 (Lesson 1) + HK$200 (Lesson 2), which is HK$600 in total.
Parents pay you directly and never pay MatchMax. The admin fee is a separate arrangement between you and MatchMax, so the family's tuition arrives in full and you settle your matching fee with us separately.
Cancellations and no-shows
If Lesson 1 is cancelled with at least 24 hours' notice, or the match ends before Lesson 1 is ever booked, there is no admin fee.
If the family does not show up for Lesson 1, or cancels it less than 24 hours before the start, the family still owes you the Lesson 1 rate, and the Lesson 1 portion of the admin fee applies (1.0 lesson). If they later continue, the normal 1.5-lesson total applies instead. Drop-Protection does not cover a no-show or a late cancellation.
Once Lesson 1 is completed, however, the Lesson 1 portion of the fee is accrued and payable even if either party cancels before Lesson 2. The lesson happened and the match was delivered, so that portion stands. If you are ever unsure how to handle a cancellation, check the guidance on handling last-minute changes in Confirm lesson dates, reschedules, and tutor sick days.
What happens after you settle
Once the admin fee is settled, you keep 100% of the agreed tuition for every later lesson. There are no further platform charges on that case, so what you agree with the parent is what you earn.
Unlocking parent phone contact
In the current version of the platform, parent phone contact unlocks once the admin fee is settled. Until then, please keep communicating through the MatchMax chat, which is monitored for quality and safety. To unlock as early as possible:
- Report Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 completion to MatchMax Admin promptly after each session.
- Report completed hours accurately and on time. Your report is what triggers the fee calculation and the contact unlock, so late or inaccurate reports delay the process for everyone.
Accurate reporting also protects you: it keeps the cancellation rules above straightforward and ensures your tuition arrangements stay clean. For more on how we handle sensitive situations, see Safeguarding and integrity.
