Post-lesson updates: the Rule of 3

A simple three-part structure for short post-lesson updates that show parents real progress and set the next step.

MatchMax 團隊撰寫 · 約 3 分鐘讀完· 更新於 Oct 2026

Parents who can see progress stay for the long term. After every lesson, send the parent a short update: three or four lines is enough. The Rule of 3 keeps it consistent, and the template below means it takes two minutes to write.

The Rule of 3

Every update covers the same three things:

  1. What the task was, in plain English. Translate jargon for parents. SBA, TOK, Paper 1, or internal assessment terms mean little to most families; say what the student actually did, such as "practised structuring an essay argument" rather than "worked on Paper 1 response criteria".
  2. Why it matters. Connect the task to the final grade or the school goal. One sentence is enough: this skill is worth marks in the exam, or it unblocks the next topic.
  3. The exact measurable next step. Name the homework, the deadline, and what next lesson will focus on. "Practise more" is not a next step; "complete two past-paper questions on probability by Friday" is.

A personalised written summary addressed to both parent and student works best. Include specific, measurable success criteria and clear homework, so everyone knows what progress looks like before the next session.

Post-lesson update (Rule of 3)

Hi [Parent Name] and [Student Name]! Quick recap of today's lesson. Covered: [Topic]. Progress: [Student Name] could [Specific Task] independently; [Skill] still needs support, so we will keep practising. Next step: complete [Homework] by [Date]; next lesson we focus on [Priority]. If anything new comes up at school, share it here beforehand so I can prepare!

The 15-minute study-plan chat after Lesson 1

After the first lesson, offer a short chat of about 15 minutes with the parent (and the student where possible) to agree goals. Use it to:

  • Agree two or three concrete goals for the term, with measurable markers of success.
  • Share the written study plan with the parent so expectations are on the record.
  • Propose a regular weekly slot without pressure. Suggest a time that works for you and let them confirm or counter; do not treat the suggestion itself as a booking. Confirmation works best through the flow in Confirm lesson dates, reschedules, and tutor sick days.

Keeping the feedback loop alive

Invite the parent to share school updates, test dates, and new topics before lessons so you can prepare. This turns your update into a two-way channel and makes the tutoring feel like a partnership. When parents see you acting on their input, renewals take care of themselves.
