Getting started

Request a tutor and get matched

Learn what to include in a tutor request and what happens after you post it, from coordinator review to matched introductions.

A clear request is the fastest route to a good match. Coordinators can only match against what you tell them, so this page covers what to include, what happens after you post, and what to have ready when introductions start.

What a strong request contains

Write your request as if you were briefing a friend who knows tutors. The details that matter most:

  • Subjects and level. Name the subjects and your child's year or form, for example "Secondary 3 maths" or "Year 10 physics".
  • Curriculum. Say which curriculum your child follows: DSE, IB, IGCSE, or A-Level. Tutors specialise, and a DSE specialist is not automatically the right fit for IB. If you are weighing options, see how the curricula compare.
  • Lesson frequency. How many lessons per week you want, and how long each should be.
  • Preferred times. Weekday evenings, weekend mornings, or whatever suits your family's routine.
  • Format. Face-to-face / in-home lessons, Zoom, or either.
  • Budget range. A realistic range rather than a single number gives the coordinator room to find a better fit. Our pricing page can help you calibrate.

One or two lines about your child's goals also help: catching up, building confidence, or pushing for top grades.

What happens after you post

  1. Coordinator review. A human coordinator reads your request, checks it is complete, and follows up promptly if anything is unclear. There is no fixed response clock, so replies come as soon as the coordinator is available.
  2. Matched introductions. The coordinator introduces you to self-employed tutors whose specialism, curriculum experience, and availability fit your request.
  3. Your choice. You compare the introduced tutors and pick the one you want. If the first introductions are not right, say so and the coordinator keeps looking.

The first two lessons are the supported concierge window. If the fit is not right in that period, tell the coordinator and other tutors can be introduced. To understand how this works overall, read how MatchMax matching works.

Not sure yet? Ask for a free online fit call first

If your child has had a run of bad fits, or you are unsure whether tuition is the right move at all, tell the coordinator. Many tutors on the platform offer a free 15–20 minute online call before any lesson: a short video chat where your child meets the tutor, talks through goals and how they like to learn, and both sides see whether it clicks.

What a fit call is and is not:

  • It is a conversation about goals, expectations, and scheduling — roughly the length of a coffee chat.
  • It is not a free lesson. Actual teaching starts in the first booked lesson, and asking a tutor to teach a full session unpaid is not something we will broker.
  • It is optional on both sides. Tutors offer it when they want to; the coordinator will tell you which of your introductions do.

Asking for a fit call costs nothing and saves everyone a mismatched Lesson 1. Just say "we'd like a fit call first" when you respond to an introduction.

What to prepare before introductions

A little preparation makes the first conversations easier:

  • Your child's recent schoolwork or a topic list, so you can show the tutor where they are.
  • A short list of times that genuinely work in a typical week.
  • Questions you want to ask the tutor. Choosing the right tutor for your child includes a list you can borrow from.
  • A payment method you are comfortable with, since you pay your tutor directly for tuition by FPS, bank transfer, or cash. MatchMax never holds tuition payments, and parents never pay MatchMax a matching fee or commission. See pay your tutor directly and billing cycles for how this works.
