Supporting your child

Track your child's progress lesson by lesson

Use the Rule of 3 after every lesson: what the task was, why it matters for the goal, and the exact measurable next step, so you always know tuition is working.

"It went fine" is not a progress report. This guide gives you a simple three-part test, the Rule of 3, for judging every lesson, plus the questions and habits that keep you genuinely informed about how tuition is going.

The Rule of 3

After each lesson, you should be able to hear three things from your child or the tutor:

  1. What the task was, in plain language. Not "we did maths" but "we practised circular measure past-paper questions, section B".
  2. Why it matters for the final grade or school goal. The task should connect to something real: a weak topic from the last school test, a paper section worth heavy marks, an entrance exam date.
  3. The exact measurable next step. Not "more practice" but "two timed past papers on this topic before next Thursday's lesson, then we mark them together".

If all three are present, the tuition has a direction. If you regularly get only "fine" and "some exercises", ask the questions below until the three parts show up. Most tutors welcome this; it tells them what you value.

What a good post-lesson update looks like

A good update takes the tutor two or three sentences. For example: "Today we worked through this paper's question 7 on calculus, which she lost most marks on in the school test. She can now do the standard parts but struggles under time pressure. For next time, one timed section from a past paper, and please send the marked school test so I can compare."

Notice what it contains: a specific task, a link to a real assessment, and a measurable next step. Notice also what it invites: your school feedback. A tutor who asks for your side of the picture, not just reports theirs, is a tutor building a full picture of your child.

Questions that get more than "it went fine"

Keep a few of these ready, and rotate them:

  • What was the one topic today, and how did it connect to the last school test?
  • What could she not do at the start of the lesson that she can do now?
  • What will he be doing on his own before the next lesson, and how will we know it was done?
  • Where do you think the marks are being lost right now, and what is the plan for that?
  • What should I be looking for in the next school test to know this is working?

You do not need all five after every lesson. One or two, asked consistently, change the quality of the answers you get.

Sharing school feedback and test papers with the tutor

Your child's school sees your child far more often than the tutor does, so school feedback is gold. Marked test papers, teacher comments, and exam schedules all help a tutor aim tuition at the real target. A few habits make this work:

  • Photograph marked papers and send them in the same WhatsApp thread you use for scheduling, so everything about the tuition lives in one place.
  • Share the school calendar of tests and exams when terms start, so the tutor can plan backwards from dates.
  • Pass on teacher comments verbatim, even blunt ones. "Rushes section B" tells a tutor exactly what to train.

If you share something sensitive, say how you would like it used. Good tutors will adjust.

When to reassess the match

Progress should be visible within weeks, not months. If several lessons pass without any of the Rule of 3 appearing, or school test results keep sliding despite regular lessons, it is fair to reassess. Raise it with the tutor first; a good tutor will adjust the plan or tell you honestly if the fit is wrong. If it still is not working, the early lessons exist precisely so you can change course. Rescheduling and cancelling a lesson covers the mechanics, and choosing the right tutor for your child helps when it is time to compare new cards. Because you pay your tutor directly each billing cycle, you are never locked into a prepaid block while you decide.
